New bathrooms always look great. Regardless of how religiously you clean, certain surfaces over time will need to be replaced to ensure the aesthetic look and prevent the build-up of mould, including silicone. The question is: How do you know when it’s time to re-silicone your bathroom?

What Is Silicone?

Silicone is a thick, flexible, adhesive material that acts as both a glue and sealant. It is applied along exposed joints and cures as it dries. Silicone can be used in many ways throughout the bathroom, such as:

  • Around sinks, shower heads and taps
  • Along the top of the bath where it meets the tile/bath surround
  • Where tile meets the ceiling or floor
  • Along the top and joints of a bath surround
  • Around shower bases and joins in shower walls
  • Along the bottom of the bath and shower where it meets the floor
  • Along the top of the vanity where it meets the splashback
  • Where the top of the splashback meets the wall

There are multiple types of silicone available, though not all kinds are suitable for use in the bathroom. Canny use silicones that are mould and mildew resistant and most suitable for each specific job.

How Long Does Silicone Last?

Time lines can vary but Silicone should last approximately five years. There are variables that will determine the actual length of time between replacement, including:

  • Type and quality of Silicone used
  • Application process
  • The condition of the surface when it was applied
  • Humidity levels
  • Pre-existing mould or mildew
  • Cleaning practices
